is my fish tank cycle done?
Ive been cycling it for two weeks with a few fish and cycle chemicals but i dont want to buy those exensize water testing kits, and there is this weird stuff growing on the glass, is it done cycling. the algae stuff is super hard to see and is clear.
Only way to tell for sure is to get a test kit and check the water.
The test strips are not super accurate, but should work for your needs.
If you have zero ammonia and nitrite at this point then you have a working cycle. But the tank will only cycle to the match the number of fish you have in there, so you still need to add the extra fish in stages to build up the cycle.
Algae/diatoms etc allways grow in the tank, they are not really related to the cycle, so you cant use that as a guide.
If you aren’t sure, leave it another week or two, if your fish are still fine it’s probably safe to add a few more. If you aren’t testing the water, take things slower and your fish should make it. Rush things and you might have a disaster.

Sure, the BSG and her annoyingly brilliant younger brother are going as well, but it’s still almost kind of a date, isn’t it? The festival gives the BSG a super idea — an environmental science fair at Abigail Adams Junior High. But plans for a bubble gum factory nearby put Avery and Katani on opposite sides of an environmental issue — and Avery finds herself in a bubble gum war with the Queens of Mean! |

Freshwater Algae of North America $175 Freshwater algae are among the most diverse and ubiquitous organisms on earth. They occupy an enormous range of ecological conditions from lakes and rivers to acidic peat swamps, inland saline lakes, snow and ice, damp soils, wetlands, desert soils, wastewater treatment plants, and are symbionts in and on many plants, fungi, and animals. In North America, the variety of freshwater habitats colonized by algae is very rich, and offers an enormous and fascinating range of environments for their study. They form the base of most aquatic food webs and are critical to studies of ecosystem health. Algal ecologists and taxonomists play an important role in the understanding of aquatic ecosystems: their biodiversity, productivity, interactions with other organisms, and water quality. This book provides in one volume a practical and comprehensive guide to the genera of freshwater algae known from North America. The format combines the necessary ecological, taxonomic and methodological information for all scientists working in aquatic environments, whether their specialty is in environmental monitoring and water quality assessment, biological composition, ecology, evolution, or molecular biology. Key Features * The first complete accounting of North America’s freshwater algal genera in more than 50 years * Includes a guide to the current literature on species identification in each group of algae * High-quality photographs and drawings of more than 770 genera * A clear, easy-to-use introductory key to the diagnostic chapters * Synthetic chapters on freshwater habitats, use of algae in environmental assessment, and control of nuisance algae * Contributions from 27 experts in all areas of freshwater algae * Extensive literature citations * Companion volume of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates 2nd edition, edited by Throp and Covich |

Algae and Cyanobacteria in Extreme Environments $399 Algae and Cyanobacteria in Extreme Environments is a unique collection of essays, contributed by leading scientists from around the world, devoted to algae ??? and some related microbes ??? observed in unexpected harsh habitats, which it seems are an oasis or Garden of Eden for these organisms. This timely book on Extremophilic algae, including its especially impressive micrographs, may provide clues about the edges of life on Earth and possibly elsewhere in the universe. Defining locations from the anthropomorphic point of view, the environments explored ranges from severe and distant to ???normal??? places. The algae discussed, microbial oxygenic phototrophs, are classified into various categories according to their habitats. They thrive in various temperature ranges, at the limits of pH values, in salt solutions, under UV radiation, dryness, heavy metals, anaerobic niches, under various levels of illuminations, and under hydrostatic pressure. Authors discuss bio-diversely algal territories ecologically ??? the hot springs with the thermophiles or acido-thermophiles; Antarctica, the Arctic, and permafrost zones with their cold lovers (Psychrophiles); soda lakes with the alkaliphiles, saltine areas with halophiles. In addition to general essays, Algal species discussed in detail include diatoms, Cyanidium, Galdieria, Dunaliella, and Chroococcidiopsis. This volume is a must for students of the field of biodiversity, as well as those in phycology, ecology and general biological research. |

Fungi, Algae, and Protists $40 Fungi, protists, and algae are among the most diverse life forms on the planet. Tiny protists range from plants to animals. Algae range from single celled plants to 60-foot-long kelp. Fungi occupy a kingdom of their own. Although their place in nature—neither truly plants or animals—may make them seem strange, they are actually quite familiar to us for their use in various foods, medicines, and biotechnologies. Indeed, our consumption of bread or reliance on penicillin would not be possible without these diverse eukaryotic organisms. This intriguing volume delves into the taxonomy, structure, and function of each group and evaluates their wide-ranging natural and societal impact. |

Survival Strategies of the Algae $28.96 This book was originally published in 1983, and it provides information regarding ecological conditions and population dynamics of both marine and freshwater algae form diverse habitats. Unfavourable environmental conditions induce the production of resting spores in certain organisms. Many algae have successfully developed specialized resistant characteristics that give them considerable evolutionary advantages over organisms that are unable to withstand periods of extreme change in their environment. Though the resting spore is considered to be an advantageous and primitive trait, the benefits are offset by the great amount of energy needed to produce and maintain the cell in near-dormancy over long periods of time and by the potentially ‘lost’ number of cell divisions that could have occurred during the resting phase. The interesting contrast of advantages and disadvantages has stimulated biologists to investigate the morphology and the underlying processes of the physiology of vegetative cells and thick-walled resting spores. |

Algae: Volume 1, Myxophyceae, Peridinieae, Bacillarieae, Chlorphyceae $43.79 George Stephen West (1876-1919) was a prominent British botanist specialising in freshwater algae. In 1906 he became a lecturer in botany at the University of Birmingham and was later appointed the Mason Professor of Botany. This volume was first published in 1916 as the first of the Cambridge Botanical Handbooks series and provides a description of both marine and freshwater algae in the Myxophyceae, Peridinieae, Bacillarieae and Chlorophyceae classes. West describes the habitat, biological conditions, distribution, internal and external structures and life history of these algae in great detail, with a bibliography concluding each chapter. The book provided the first detailed description of the Myxophyceae (or blue-green) class of algae, and provides an insight into knowledge and classification of algae at the time of publication. A second volume containing a full taxonomic account of freshwater algae was planned, but not published owing to the author’s death in 1919. |
