Journals, 1939-1977 $17.49 There is nothing like Keith Vaughan’s Journals. They represent one of the greatest pieces of confessional writing of the twentieth-century. Keith Vaughan was a painter and belonged to the Neo-Romantic group, other members including Graham Sutherland, John Minton, Michael Ayrton, Ceri Richards, John Piper and John Craxton. He was also gay and much troubled by his sexuality. ‘Faced at the age of 27 with what then seemed the likelihood of imminent extinction before I had properly got started’, he began the Journals in 1939 and only finished them at the very moment of his suicide in 1977. The Journals are edited by Alan Ross, and in his words they are ‘a self-portrait of astonishing honesty: devoid of disguise in any shape or form, or hypocrisy. It is difficult to think of anything in literature they resemble.’ The earlier Journals, covering his war and his period of greatest creativity in the late 1940s and 1950s, ‘are revealing for the light they shed on a painter’s character and, to a lesser extent, working methods.’ The last Journals chronicle ‘a descent into hell . . . redeemed by their frankness, spleen and dry humour.’ First published in 1966 and then reissued in amplified form in 1989, it is the latter version Faber Finds is reissuing. The fuller edition itself has been out of print for a long time, so its renewed availability will be welcome. |

The Journals of Josiah Gorgas, 1857-1878 $27.8 Josiah Gorgas was best known as the highly regarded Chief of Confederate Ordnance. Born in 1818, he attended West Point, served in the U.S. Army, and later, after marrying Amelia Gayle, daughter of a former Alabama governor, joined the Confederacy. After the Civil War he served as president of The University of Alabama until ill health forced him to resign. His journals, maintained between 1857 and 1878, reflect the family’s economic successes and failures, detail the course of the South through the Civil War, and describe the ordeal of Reconstruction. Few journals cover such a sweep of history. An added dimension is the view of Victorian family life as Gorgas explored his feelings about aspects of parental responsibility and transmission of values to children–a rarely documented account from the male perspective. His son, called Willie in the journals, was William Crawford Gorgas (1854-1920), who was noted for his fight to control yellow fever and who became surgeon general of the United States. In his foreword to the volume, Frank E. Vandiver states: “Wiggins has done much more than present a well-edited version of Gorgas’s diaries and journals; she has interpreted them in full Gorgas family context and in perspective of the times they cover. . . . Wiggins informs with the sort of editorial notes expected of a careful scholar, but she enlightens with wide knowledge of American and southern history. . . .
